Remote Tower Control Centre Leipzig

In Germany, DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung and Frequentis have put the Leipzig Remote Tower Control centre (RTC centre) into operation.

The successful collaboration between Frequentis and DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung has led to a groundbreaking transformation in air traffic control operations. This initiative represents a major leap forward in digital air traffic management, combining technological innovation with operational excellence.

The RTC Leipzig began operations in 2018, initially managing air traffic for Saarbrücken Airport. Over time, its scope expanded to include Erfurt-Weimar and in the future Dresden airports, enabling the control of multiple airports from a single, centralized location. This setup not only enhances operational efficiency but also significantly improves flexibility. The system has been certified by the German regulator and since then, is in operations without interruption.

The solution uses 360-degree standard and infrared cameras to provide seamless panoramic views of both airports in all conditions, while high-performance pan-tilt-zoom cameras enable air traffic controllers in Leipzig to create their own views. Advanced video tracking technology detects and labels IFR and VFR flights and vehicles, while detailed surveillance information increases situational awareness for controllers.

This partnership gave rise to Frequentis DFS Aerosense, a joint venture between DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung and Frequentis. Headquartered in Vienna, with operational presence in Langen, Germany, Aerosense combines Frequentis’ technological expertise with DFS’s operational know-how to successfully deliver Remote Tower solutions.
