Virtual tower solutions

Typically chosen by hub airports or larger airports with high traffic volumes and multiple areas of responsibility, Aerosense virtual tower solutions can manage even the most complex scenarios safely and efficiently.

Virtual tower solutions employ similar digital technologies used in remote tower solutions but are typically sited on or close to the airport. A virtual tower often supplements and augments an existing traditional ATC tower – for example, by providing enhanced visibility in areas where physical lines of sight are blocked by other buildings. Virtual tower solutions may also be used to enhance visibility at night or during poor weather conditions.

In a virtual tower environment, the ability to move workload seamlessly between controller working positions facilitates safe handovers at the end of a work shift. Simplified work transfer makes it easier to respond effectively during emergency situations, enabling supervisors to reallocate tasks to less busy controllers. In addition, Aerosense offers sophisticated planning tools to model likely future workload and to help ensure that the appropriate levels of staffing are scheduled.

For many airports, a virtual tower solution makes an ideal contingency option, providing a full backup capability for the main ATC tower. Deploying a virtual tower initially as a fall-back option may also provide a long-term path to replacing the main tower at lower cost. And when not in active use, a contingency tower can provide a valuable resource for training controllers, running simulations, and testing new software or user devices.

Virtual Tower Solutions are addressing larger airports with higher traffic volumes and multiple areas of responsibility. The concept covers high-capacity, high-complexity environments which require a safe and efficient interaction the solution must be validated with the controllers to be fit for purpose and ensure high performance.
